What if our school district doesn’t yet participate in the Drive 2 Fitness?

When Drive 2 Fitness is rolled out in a School District, each school needs a champion of the program, in order to keep up with its peers in the district. More importantly, the children need a School Leader — someone who will create an educational atmosphere of health and fitness, which allows them to succeed in their Drive 2 Fitness.

D2F School Leaders are typically teachers who have an opportunity to frequently interact with most or all students in the school, such PE teachers, and often Health and Computer teachers. But, no matter what kind of educator you are, please consider stepping up the challenge of becoming a D2F School Leader, a fostering the Drive 2 Fitness at your school.

When you register and are approved as a School Leader by the local D2F Franchiser or School District, you will be able to manage children’s accounts online and monitor key statistics and rewards distribution. The School Leader also helps to promote honesty and adherence to the D2F Honor Code among participants.

See our School Leader User Guide.

We have found that the most successful schools work out a system which is a team effort. The following is an example of a model Drive 2 Fitness elementary school:

Physical Education Teacher

The PE Teacher serves as the School Leader. With the support of the principal prior to the start of the school year, the PE Teacher contacts the Computer Teachers, Health Teacher and School Nurse, in order to coordinate registration of the children at www.d2f.org, and the printing/ copying of Scorecards and Parent letters for the children to bring home (in some cases, this my already be prepared or completed by the district).

The PE Teacher orders D2F posters to hang up in the gym, hands out Scorecards to the children at the beginning of the school year and may hold a special D2F Tip-Off in the Computer Lab, in cooperation with the Computer Teacher. Their children are registered for the first time, allowing children to start tracking their points at school.
Parents can then easily register themselves and link up with their child’s account at home, in order to support their child and help verify their points. As a School Leader, the PE Teacher can work with the other teachers to have educational sessions about creative ways to earn D2F Points (such as an hour or more of physical activity in a day), send communications to parents to increase their participation and hold events to keep students excited.

The D2F website automates the distribution of rewards created for the D2F Franchise your School District is part of, but, a PE Teacher can also offer additional rewards such as jump ropes, recognition certificates and other materials that further reinforce the D2F message. There is lots of room for creativity!

Computer Teacher

With an increasing number of reports that criticize increasing screen time as a primary culprit in childhood obesity without distinguishing video game and TV time from educational technology, we hope to show that regular, brief encounters with online tools like www.d2f.org can leave a lasting positive impression. To do so, we need your help.
Computer class presents an opportunity to enroll a group of children, in collaboration with the PE Teacher, or on your own. It is also the ideal time for children to spend 2-3 minutes logging in to their personal D2F homepage to track their D2F Points. Even if they don’t have class every day, they can bring their paper Scorecards and copy over their points from the previous week onto their site. At the same time, you can also use the website to teach lessons about each of the D2F Tips and how they can have a positive effect.

Health Teacher

In schools which have wisely made health education a priority, the Health Teacher can be the ideal facilitator for D2F with the children, potentially in partnership with other teachers. Most health teachers already teach what D2F promotes; D2F offers some new material and a new element of fun and motivation to practice what Health Teachers teach…

Classroom Teachers

The classroom teacher is the primary driver of a child’s experience. We appreciate that an overwhelming amount of material and responsibilities are constantly being placed on classroom teachers, which is why we aimed to make the online D2F program as automated and easy to use as possible.

Classroom Teachers can take their school to the next level in D2F and help their children earn the grand prizes available in your region. You can hang up D2F posters, let them keep paper Scorecards in a special place in their desks, or, in an ideal world, even allow them time each day to track their D2F Points on one of the classroom computers while teaching them something new about healthy living or taking a physical activity break with half of the classroom.

Teachers can register and login to see how their class is doing compared to other classes under their Teacher View. Plus they can track their own points to serve as a positive role model for their students.

School Nurses

D2F provides tools to help measure the effectiveness of the program in your school. It allows reporting of height, weight, and measures of self-esteem, which most Nurses already obtain. Further, School Nurses can be powerful advocates of the program, both by encouraging staff, and by reminding and educating children about their Drive 2 Fitness when they seem them.

Music and Art Teachers

Fitness and health is intimately related with creativity, and creativity helps fuel fun and consistent fitness. Music and Art teachers can help children find ways to live out their Drive 2 Fitness, by learning about music and dance or by drawing how they might earn their D2F Points, in their own personal way. Being creative is one way to maintain a fun and active Drive 2 Fitness, for a lifetime.

Business Teacher

In a world where free time seems to be shrinking, business class can help children reorganize and understand the events of their day. Organization and scheduling, among the fundamental business skills, are also fundamental to a life-long Drive 2 Fitness. Learning how to swap some TV time for some outdoor play, or perhaps how to multi-task by jump roping during a TV program, are just a couple important examples.

Principals

With budget cuts and standardized test scores to deal with, we understand how fitness and health can sometimes fall by the wayside. But, we have been impressed by hundreds of administrators who continuously go the extra mile to promote the health and fitness of their children, realizing that in the long-run, this effort will have a direct impact on the success of their students. Principals can unite a school around an exciting Drive 2 Fitness, and guide their school to be Champions in the area’s D2F Tournament.

What if our school district doesn’t yet participate in the Drive 2 Fitness?

A local Drive 2 Fitness General Manager applies to Fitness Forward Foundation for access to D2F start-up rights and materials, and then takes responsibility for local D2F awareness, getting rewards sponsors to donate prizes, and for implementation with the participating School District(s).

General Managers can be individuals representing state or local government, universities, health systems, or a School District itself. In fact, if your area does not yet have a Drive 2 Fitness Franchise, you can spearhead the effort by applying to be a General Manager yourself! You can the run the program with minimal rewards (i.e. just recognition certificates produced automatically with the online site) or you can create a major community-wide effort with rewards, events and a D2F Tournament. Also, anyone can participate in the National Drive 2 Fitness Sweepstakes, which begins in the summer of 2005.

But, no matter how much you can do, even the smallest effort will go miles for the children you mentor!
